WWE has officially changed the names of the two PPVs in October. No Mercy and Cyber Sunday have been changed to ‘Hell in a Cell’ and ‘Annihilation’ respectively.
WWE had a poll on their website asking for feedback on a potential name for a Hell in a Cell themed PPV. It is believed that the top matches – probably the title matches – will be contested in the Hell in a Cell.
WWE has been looking for new hooks to sell their PPVs on. The Royal Rumble is usually a success based on the Royal Rumble match alone. No Way Out has had success in terms of buys when the top matches are contested in the Elimination Chamber.
However, WWE has had failed themed PPVs, such as last year’s Unforgiven – now renamed to ‘Breaking Point’, which is supposed to be an all submission PPV. Unforgiven featured the debut of the Scramble matches, which did nothing to help the usually poor buy-rate of Unforgiven.
Also in the failed PPV theme ideas was the Cyber Sunday/Taboo Tuesday concept. Last year WWE changed the way voting was done when they switched from online voting to text voting. WWE always told us the number of votes previously, but last year the number was never mentioned.
With Cyber Sunday being now known as Annihilation, it looks as though it could be just another PPV, rather than a themed show.
Hell in a Cell takes place on October, 4th, and Annihilation will take place on October, 25th.
