On last night’s ECW, Mr. McMahon appeared on the show to officially call an end to the 44-month run of the ECW brand. At the end of the month, ECW will cease to exist.
The move to end the ECW brand had been talked about since the back-end of last year. Both WWE and Syfy were unhappy with the ECW ratings, which had dropped from 1.2s at the bringing of 2009, to low 0.9 towards the end of the year.
In three weeks time, ECW will go off the air and be replaced with a new WWE produced show on Syfy.
During his announcement, McMahon said the new show will be a “never-before-seen” program that he claimed will be “the next evolution of WWE” and “the next evolution of television history.”
McMahon’s wording included the word “next” a lot, which would fit in with the news reported by PWInsider.com.
WWE trademarked six separate trademarks for “NXT” on January 22. These trademarks include the usage of the TV name and using the name for marketing and merchandising purposes.
It’s expected that WWE will name the show something along the lines of “WWE NXT”.
