Teen Arrested At Las Vegas Rally Tried To Kill Donald Trump

"Sandford then tried to disarm the officer", the department said.

A man who tried to grab a police officer's gun at a Donald Trump rally at the weekend says he planned to kill the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Police said Michael Sandford struck up a conversation with a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer under the pretenses that he was seeking to get an autograph. He is expected to make a court appearance on Monday.

Nearby officers thwarted the attempted gun theft and quickly apprehended Sandford.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Sandford had a British driver's license and claimed to have been in the United States for a year and a half, the documents showed.

Sandford told officers he had been planning an assassination for about a year and was convinced he would die in the attempt. On Friday he went to a shooting range to learn how to use a handgun in preparation for the rally.

About 1,500 people attended the rally, which was held in the Mystere Theater inside the casino. In case his plan fell through, he told authorities that he reserved a ticket for the Trump rally in Phoenix that same day. Secret Service agents had to run to Trump's side during a campaign rally earlier this year in OH to protect him against a man attempting to rush the stage during his remarks.
