But Clinton spent much of his Tuesday night speech describing the personal side of his wife - a pitch perhaps aimed at improving Hillary Clinton's poll numbers as they relate to trustworthiness.

On the PBS commentariat panel, liberal columnist Mark Shields suggested that the "change maker" stuff was supposed help the Dem ticket with a public that may be reluctant to elect Clinton if they think she represents a continuation of the policies of the Obama administration. The 2012 keynote address at the Democratic convention, in which Bill Clinton took the stage and introduced President Barack Obama to the delegates, was one of his more memorable performances. But Tuesday night's roll call vote sealed her nomination without trouble inside the hall and Sanders himself stepped up in the name of unity to ask that her nomination be approved by acclamation.

The emails, published by WikiLeaks last week, revealed that the DNC favoured Mrs Clinton's candidacy over rival Bernie Sanders, triggering a leadership shake-up within the DNC.

After a hard-fought primary against Clinton, Sanders touted to Texas delegates how his campaign collaborated with hers to reshape the Democratic Party, including teaming up to "make the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party".

"It's one of the biggest issues and one of the biggest reasons why nobody here is Hillary supporters", Ernest Rondo said at a rally in support of Sanders earlier this week. It was about one of her cases!

"The day after she's elected, everyone will be a feminist", said Eleanor Smeal, president of Feminist Majority, interviewed on the convention floor after the roll call.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination, said Kaine had brought his beliefs in Catholic social justice to his public service, something he has practiced throughout his career.

Wednesday's convention events will focus on national security, looking to contrast the 68-year-old former secretary of state's skills with Trump's "unsteady, unfit and unsafe approach", said Clinton campaign chair John Podesta. A leader who knows we are all more secure when women have the opportunity to lead with their heads high and their strides strong.

Former Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln recalled fellow senators wondering whether Clinton would require a lot of attention when she joined the Senate in 2001.

Bear Atwood, 56, a Terry, Mississippi, civil rights attorney and at-large delegate, was moved to tears when Clinton became the nominee.

"I first proposed to her on a trip to Great Britain".

Said Clinton, in a surprise appearance on video at night's end: "We just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet".

"I'm always open to new information", said Colby Clipston, 23, of Portland, Oregon.

"We believe that no matter who you are, no matter where you're from, no matter who you love, equal means equal", Warren said.
