Canada's Denis Shapovalov upsets Australia's Nick Kyrgios at Rogers Cup

His reward is a match in the second round with Grigor Dimitrov, another figure struggling to recapture the form of old having slumped to 40th in the world.

"I think the Canadians probably support their athletes a little better than the Australians do", Kyrgios said.

Nick Kyrgios' US Open build up is off to a rocky start after he was beaten by 17-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov at the Toronto Masters.

"I didn't play great, he played well", Kyrgios said. Shapovalov came back to break Kyrgios in the next game, and the Canadian fist pumped in excitement. I'm really looking forward to seeing how he's going to progress.

During the match, Kyrgios often served his first serve on his second leading to an eye-popping 18 doubles faults.

A dispirited Kyrgios appeared to stop trying in his fourth-round Wimbledon defeat to Andy Murray and, returning to the court for the first time since, things had seemingly not improved in Canada. "Obviously he was excited playing in front of his home crowd. I just didn't play great, he played well", said Kyrgios, who had an ice pack on his left knee during his post-match news conference, but said it was simply because it was hot outside.

"I love playing on a big stage". "It was very fun for me. It was great to hear some Bulgarian voices in the crowd when I got down on myself", he said.

He took the first set by overpowering the Aussie with his serve, taking the tiebreak 7-2.

At Wimbledon a few weeks ago, the reluctant tennis ace, who does not have a coach, said he opted to spend a morning playing video games rather than practice.

"I was desperate to win that point", Dimitrov admitted.

Other American winners include John Isner, who defeated Dudi Sela of Israel 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

"It was a good match from my side", said the victor, who next plays fifth seeded Czech Tomas Berdych.

Toronto's Steven Diez downed Britain's Kyle Edmund 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 while Peter Polansky, of Thornhill, Ontario, advanced following a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over American qualifier Tim Smyczek.
