It's next to impossible for a defensive player to win Super Bowl MVP awards barring a complete meltdown by the winning offense. He beat out New England quarterback Tom Brady, who received 10 votes.
Falcons offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan, who is expected to be announced as the next head coach of the San Francisco 49ers after the Super Bowl, was the assistant coach of the year.
In his ninth season with the Atlanta Falcons, "Matty Ice" set franchise records in passing yards, touchdowns, completion percentage and passer rating.
Of the six quarterbacks in that group, the stats have exactly been MVP-esque, combining for six touchdown passes, 11 interceptions, and an average quarterback rating of 71.2. For most of his nine-year career, Ryan has been considered to be just outside of the very upper tier of quarterbacks in the NFL. This year, he led the National Football League in touchdown receptions with 14.
Ryan is the first MVP in Atlanta Falcons history. He started working on this year in January last year.
Brady got most of the headlines, but Ryan's name was all over the Eagles' record books by the time he left school. Quinn's team played outstanding all year long on all sides of the ball.
"There is no question Matt Ryan played at an extremely high level this year", Warner said. "I was young, but I've gotten a lot better since then".
Even if he doesn't win the Super Bowl, Matt Ryan is going to have some hardware to take home with him when he leaves Houston.
Will the real Matt Ryan please step forward? He led the league in both sacks (15.5) and forced fumbles (6) and has been an overall menace to opposing offenses this season.
The Cowboys lost in the playoffs to the Packers, but had a resurgent season as six players made the Pro Bowl and were led by a rookie quarterback after veteran Tony Romo injured his back during the preseason. However, he believes Brady is the best to play the position.
Meanwhile, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was named the NFL Coach of the Year.
