"In the situation of a fractured mandate, everyone is in the running to form the government".
The BJP is already preparing for a countrywide celebration with the prospects of sweeping UP and forming govt in Uttarakhand and Goa. That means the BJP has to keep winning state elections if it hopes to achieve the upper house majority that Modi needs to advance his agenda. The BJP's alliance with regional parties like Apna Dal and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) further helped it consolidate non-Yadav OBC caste groups like the Patels, the Kurmis and the Rajbhars. Though BJP was criticised for not fielding any Muslim candidate, what could have possibly worked in favour of the saffron party is its stand on Triple Talaq issue in Supreme Court where it stated that it violates fundamental rights of Muslim women.
"The BJP won elections in UP because of selling dreams and the reality will come soon when they fail in delivering these dreams", Vadakkan told IANS.
"This has been made possible by the vision and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and able management and dedication of BJP national president Amit Shah", he said.
The lead in Uttar Pradesh is especially encouraging for the BJP as for the last 15 years it's put in a weak showing in the state, which is home to over 210 million people.
In 2012, the Samajwadi Party swept to power defeating incumbent chief minister Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party which had got an absolute majority in the previous elections. Her allegation is unlikely to be taken seriously.
When will election results for UP, Punjab, and other states be announced?
Four other states - Goa, Manipur, Punjab and Uttarakhand - also held polls between February 4 and this past Wednesday, with all votes being counted Saturday. The BJP won 312 of the 403 seats in the state assembly and, with 39.7 percent of the vote, nearly matched its showing in Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 general election, when it claimed the biggest parliamentary majority in three decades. Exit polls have predicted victory for BJP in Uttarakhand. The state has had a history of hung Assemblies. But its staggering demographic weight makes it the most politically consequential state in India's democracy. The results of the Uttar Pradesh election will indicate whether these efforts have been enough to sustain his - and the BJP's - popularity in the state. Still, a win in Uttar Pradesh would change Modi's expectations for the remainder of his first term in office and a potential second term.
In Uttarakhand, which has 70 seats, three exit polls predicted a landslide win for the BJP.
In a tweet, Modi said he was overjoyed by the "unprecedented support from all sections of society" and congratulated party workers. One poll showed the BJP clearing the halfway mark of 202 seats, reported NDTV. The states in the northeast have seen a very slow rate of development with rampant corruption and violence.
"People have decided we accept the verdict", he said while addressing the media after the election results came out.
Mathur has the distinction of managing and winning elections for the party. I agree that, in UP, we need fundamental restructuring thinking for Congress as a whole.
