Saints won't give CB Malcolm Butler offer sheet

Johnny Manziel's breakfast date with Sean Payton during Super Bowl weekend in Houston was nothing more than a get-to-know-you session, the Saints coach explained Tuesday. "And that would be in a much different phase than [restricted free agent and Patriots cornerback] Malcolm Butler or some of the things we're discussing as we approach the draft", Payton said.

And Butler, who has yet to sign his one-year offer sheet with the Patriots (worth $3.91 million), has until April 21 to sign elsewhere.

"It gave me an opportunity to meet him", Payton said Wednesday morning at the National Football League owners meetings.

They made an even bigger splash when they shipped their first-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for dynamic young wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

"That is a little different [situation]", Payton said Tuesday, via the team's website, from the National Football League owners meetings in Arizona.

These are some of the dynamics in play, with Butler signing his tender the next key step in the process. "But we felt like there's some depth at certain positions in this draft, and trying to get a little bit of firepower and ammo in those first 103 picks is important".

It's not a surprise that the Saints wouldn't fork over the No. 11 pick and hand Butler a massive contract in one swoop. "In fact, I know we're not going to do that", Payton said at the NFL's annual meeting.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported Tuesday that New Orleans are not going to sign Manziel.

"It was my first time having a chance to talk to him".

Payton laments the NFL's recent decision not to add more cameras in stadiums to enhance replay, an idea initially brought up by the Patriots. "I think it will generally be a clean, quiet no track record -probably a tryout-type of opportunity". He was the only QB to play for them last season. If the Saints won't sign the 27-year-old corner to an offer sheet, a trade is the only option to pry him away from New England this season.

"I think the part of the report that insinuated that this was moving in that direction, I'm just gonna say it was false", Payton said.
