Starbucks also unveiled expanded lunch options, the Mercato line of salads and sandwiches made daily.
Now available to more than 100,000 customers across the US, the My Starbucks Barista platform will be rolled out nationwide later this year. Growth there will accelerate in the future, Starbucks said.
Schultz, speaking Wednesday at the company's 25 annual meeting of shareholders, said the company is investing in the future and that 2016 was "one of the best, strongest, and most meaningful years" in company history.
Overall, Starbucks wants to hire 240,000 people globally, including 68,000 in the USA, by 2021, as part of the company's expansion plans.
Schultz, who will hand over his CEO title to the company's current president Kevin Johnson sometime during the spring, said Starbucks had already reached its goal to hire 10,000 US military veterans and active-duty spouses a whole year ahead of schedule, resulting in the company's decision to expand its veteran employment program by hiring another 25,000 vets or their spouses by 2025. The coffee chain announced in January that it would hire 10,000 refugees by 2022.
The letter continued: "There are more than 65 million citizens of the world recognized as refugees by the United Nations, and we are developing plans to hire 10,000 of them over five years in the 75 countries around the world where Starbucks does business".
The menu, called "Mercato", initially will launch in about 100 stores in the city, but Starbucks said it expects to expand to other USA markets in the future.
"I can unequivocally tell you - and we all know this from the research we have done - is there is zero, absolutely no evidence whatsoever that there is any dilution in the integrity of the Starbucks brand, reputation, or our core business as a result of being compassionate", Schultz said.
Addressing Starbucks' recent hiccups with its mobile ordering platformand the stock's downtrend, Schultz said he was confident that the company would bounce back.
His replacement, Kevin Johnson, highlighted Starbucks' plans to boost sales inside the company's stores. He also announced plans to create more gluten-free choices, such as a gluten-free Smoked Canadian Bacon Breakfast Sandwich.
As of last fall, Starbucks Canada operated 1,399 locations across the country and employed more than 19,000 workers.
"All these things, I think, are part and parcel with building the kind of company that has a conscience", Schultz said. The chain opened 651 domestic cafes a year ago. Wednesday was no different, with an appearance from Grammy nominee Leon Bridges, a flag presentation by the Seattle Recruiting Battalion Color Guard and the singing of the national anthem by a chorus of green-aproned Starbucks employees.
