This was a test of Spurs' resilience against a vibrant Southampton team that play expressive football and matched their hosts high pressing intensity for much of this game.
"Hopefully he will not be out too long", Saints manager Claude Puel said. "Southampton are a very good team with very good players and it was hard, but in the end I think we deserved the victory". Perhaps it's harsh to criticise him for not working miracles, but after the last few years it feels odd seeing a Southampton side with so little that sets it apart.
Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, full-back Matt Targett and centre-half Virgil Van Dijk are still out injured.
Southampton: Forster 5, Cedric 6, Stephens 6, Yoshida 6, Bertrand 6, Romeu 6, Davis 5, Ward-Prowse 6, Tadic 5, Redmond 5, Gabbiadini 6.
- The only previous top-flight season than Spurs have remained unbeaten at home was 1964-1965 (21 games, 0 defeats).
It was a great chance and would prove a costly miss for the visitors as just past the half-hour mark and Tottenham won a penalty. Southampton felt that they should have had a penalty of their own at the end of the first period, after Ben Davies swung and connected with Tadic's shin.
With all being said, I expect a very open game with a lot of running on the sides, while at the same time the final outcome will most likely depend on the pure strategy of both teams. He's very smart. Outside the box, he plays like a midfielder. They generally do such a good job of limiting their opponents that Forster isn't worked often - that may be for the best.
"You can see with James, I looked at the interview when he was young, it was the same spirit - I think James is the ideal son-in-law!"
Paul Merson is backing Tottenham to continue their push towards a top-four finish in the Premier League by beating Southampton at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton live streaming online can be watched on FuboTV Online official website.
Spurs came closest to adding another goal as substitute Vincent Janssen led a counterattack and forced another good save from Forster.
Saints last scored four goals in three consecutive league games back in December 1980; a run that also included a 4-4 draw against Spurs at White Hart Lane. But not for the next eight or nine games if he is out for that long.
