Wind Storm Largest Outage In DTE History; Restoration Estimates Still Not Ready

DTE Energy said roughly 800,000 of its customers lost power in southeastern MI, and more than 665,000 were without service late Thursday morning.
High winds in Michigan's Detroit City left nearly 600,000 people without power on Wednesday and with little hope for the power to be restored quickly, according to local news report. The company was calling for assistance from Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. The cause of the extensive problems was the wet ground after the unusually mild winter and excessive rains.
A downed power line reportedly sparked another fire in St. Clair County's Kimball Township in MI, prompting the evacuation of nearby homes. "If at all possible, try to avoid these areas".
DTE is seeking to replace three coal-fired plants that are scheduled for retirement in 2023.
Packard says this is the worst power outage Consumers Energy has seen since December 2015.
"We are working on our getting our website and outage map back up", DTE Energy said.
A high wind warning from the National Weather Service runs until 7 p.m. for all counties in Southeast Michigan. Treat every downed power line as if it is energized.
Updates on estimated restoration times are hard because DTE's outage map was slow to open in the early afternoon, possible unable to handle the intense amount of traffic to it. Customers can also call DTE at 800-477-4747 to report power outages or downed lines.
There were 10 areas with between 1,500 and 2,500 outages in the region, including in Waterford, Orion, Bloomfield Hills.
On Tuesday 30,000 customers were affected, primarily in northern MI.
