Angels place Richards on DL with strained right biceps

Angels right-handed starter Garrett Richards is heading to the disabled list with a biceps strain, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. In order for the Angels to contend in the unforgiving AL West, Richards needs to be on the field as much as possible.

Richards and the Angels are cautiously confident the injury isn't a sign of something bigger. "If I can eliminate a little bit of effort and keep everything moving in a straight line, it's going to help me". Elbow feels fine. Shoulder feels fine.

The roster move is retroactive to Thursday, making Richards eligible to return April 16.

Richards struck out four and walked one, allowing three hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Angels went on to win the game with a 5-0 victory over the A's.

"He's got such a wide gap between his fastball and his breaking stuff", Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. He allowed a career-high 6 home runs in his 55.2 innings of work. He finished with a 2.61 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 26 starts that year and followed it up with a 3.65 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 2015. He then exited the game after 4 2/3 scoreless innings and was holding his right arm. Richards missed most of last season with a partially torn elbow ligament, but unusually chose rest and stem-cell injections over Tommy John surgery. He experienced tightness after throwing a curveball warming up Tuesday night.

"It was a complete surprise to us and to him", Melvin said. He threw 25 pitches, all fastballs, after his warmup. "Good feeling to have", said Bassitt, who threw about 10 bullpens before Wednesday's session.
