Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, one of the Boston Bruins' top prospects, will make his National Hockey League debut on Saturday against the Washington Capitals, the Bruins announced. "We were just playing trying to play the right way", Washington coach Barry Trotz said after the game. We have another game tomorrow to do that, and then it's "Go' time". "I thought we managed the third period when we got the lead so [there were] a lot of good things". The Capitals have won nine consecutive games against the Bruins. The Atlantic Division-champion Montreal Canadiens have home-ice advantage against the New York Rangers. But a win would have wrapped up the third seed and a first-round series against the Senators.
The Maple Leafs were to host Pittsburgh on Saturday and Columbus on Sunday.
The Toronto Maple Leafs filled the final vacant playoff spot by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 on Saturday night in dramatic fashion after losing goaltender Frederik Andersen to injury. It will face the Senators if it gets at least a point against Columbus.
But who would the Bruins rather face? The club clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday when it blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning on home ice, 4-0. Edmonton's Connor McDavid needs three points for 100 on the season with two games remaining.
Backup Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves for the Capitals, who won for the 10th time in their last 11 games.
"Now we're scoreboard-watchers", Backes said.
Washington Capitals' Justin Williams, center, and his teammates watch a replay of his goal which was eventually disallowed during the second period of an NHL hockey game against the Boston Bruins in Boston, Saturday, April 8, 2017.
Bruins No. 2 goalie Anton Khudobin stopped 21 of 24 shots he faced in the first two periods before he was replaced by starter Tuukka Rask. He had his six-game winning streak stopped.
Washington Capitals' Andre Burakovsky is dumped by Boston Bruins' Kevan Miller during the first period of an NHL hockey game in Boston Saturday, April 8, 2017.
Cassidy thought while there was no intent, the hit should have been whistled for a penalty. Forsbacka Karlsson was still able to practice with his Bruins teammates, but was deemed a non-roster player during that period. Wingers Brad Marchand enters the finale with 85 (39 goals, 46 assists) while David Pastrnak has bagged 70 (34 goals, 36 assists). Washington was without D John Carlson, who missed his third straight game with an unspecified injury, and F Brett Connolly, who was sick. C Paul Carey, a Boston native, made his TD Garden debut for Washington. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was a luxury suite for the game.
Johansson scored on Washington's first shot of the game, four minutes in.
Cassidy also said that Colin Miller and Tim Schaller would both be back in the lineup for the Black and Gold against the Capitals, which should make for some different-looking groups than we've seen over the past couple of games.
