Leicester defence under scrutiny ahead of Atletico rematch

Leicester City kept Atletico Madrid within reach as they restricted the dominant Spaniards to a single goal in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The Foxes were up against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital in the first leg of the tie when violence erupted in Madrid's Plaza Mayor.

"She sees me when I'm not at my best, when we are not winning games of football and trying to turns things around". We had a few on yellows and we knew it was a tightrope. "He's a complete player, you don't even know his position anymore, he's all over the pitch". I've always said 'Why not?' European nights are something special, especially the home nights. "They would have liked more of a cushion going back to Leicester".

Atletico played a deep line to nullify Jamie Vardy's threat after boss Diego Simeone pinpointed him as the main danger before the game.

The FC Lausanne-Sport left-back told Completesportsnigeria.com: "Atletico Madrid have the lead from last night going into the second leg but from the way Leicester have performed in the Champions League this season, you can not really bet that they will lose in England".

Antoine Griezmann was tripped by Marc Albrighton who conceded the foul, but replays showed the collision happened outside the box, and a harsh penalty was awarded to the home side.

It eventually came after Leicester's first real attack of the game, with Atletico surging forward on a lightning counter, which ended when Albrighton brought down Griezmann on the edge of the area.

Fernando Torres slipped as the goal beckoned in the second half but, that chance apart, Atletico struggled to carve out clear-cut openings against a stubborn Leicester defence. They might have scored from that free kick but obviously there is a much better chance of scoring from the penalty.

"There isn't a clause because his deal was done in the Bournemouth corridor by me after we had won 2-0, and Steve (Parish, Palace's chairman) finishing the negotiation over the phone to try and secure Mama", said Allardyce, 62.

But the defender was booked minutes later when he clipped Koke and will now be banned for the second leg.

'We were always on the tightrope with people like Robert because he's a very competitive centre-half'.

Griezmann and Saul Niguez were next to take aim from outside the box, but both failed to find the target with powerful drives that flew over Kasper Schmeichel's goal.
