NCAA Awards Championship Bids To NC Cities

The NCAA released its list of cities designated for NCAA championship sites Tuesday. The Purple Raiders are 12-7 in Stagg Bowls over the last 24 years. Though the case, one in which the NCAA is a plaintiff, should make its way to the Supreme Court at some point this year, the NCAA decided that the time was right grant two Division III events to New Jersey.

Charlotte will also host first and second round games in 2018, which was previously decided.

Of note, SUNYAC and Buffalo State will host the 2020 NCAA Division III men's ice hockey championship at HarborCenter in Buffalo.

Visit Winston-Salem projected the indoor track championship will account for 1,000 hotel room nights and an economic impact of more than $770,000 for the March 12-13, 2021, event.

The NCAA also announced that Dayton will continue to host the First Four through at least 2022.

North Carolina will again host NCAA tournament games following last month's replacement of House Bill 2 - including in Raleigh and Greensboro.

Most notably, the ACC football title game will be held in Charlotte through 2020 instead of 2019.

According to NCAA.org, UNC Charlotte will host the first and second rounds of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship in 2018 at the Spectrum Arena on March 16 and 18. The compromise was reached days after the NCAA said the state was down to its final days to get something done about the law.

North Carolina forward Isaiah Hicks (4) worked on a Miami defender in the quarterfinals of the 2017 ACC Tournament in Brooklyn. I think for sure they'll bring some of their championships here.

"We are pleased that ACC neutral site championships will return to the state of North Carolina beginning with the 2017-18 academic year", ACC commissioner John Swofford said in a statement. Following similar moves by the NCAA and National Basketball Association, the ACC had pulled the game from Charlotte in September over HB2, the recently-repealed state law that limited anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people. "It's a shame to see that those concerns have already fallen by the wayside". This upcoming fall will mark the ninth time where the Bald Eagles have served as the host site for the Division II regional meet.

Several other sports, including the 2019 women's basketball regional and the 2019 and 2021 men's soccer college cup, will also contest their championships in North Carolina in the future. The flag came down in July 2015 following the massacre of nine black parishioners in Charleston, so when the NCAA pulled basketball tournaments from North Carolina this past season, the games went to Greenville. This year's All-Star Game, originally scheduled to be held in Charlotte, was moved to New Orleans.

The loss of men's basketball tournament games was particularly jarring in basketball-crazy North Carolina, the site of more tournament games (251) than any other state.

And yes, North Carolina will host some events.

"How can LGBTQ people - especially members of the transgender community - be safe and free from discrimination, much less protected against mistreatment or harassment with the sham fake repeal of HB2?" said Equality NC Executive Director Chris Sgro. Those were reinstated by the NCAA after the end of HB 2.

HB2 ordered that people at a government-run facility must use bathrooms that correspond to the gender on their birth certificate. "New Jersey state law presently does not allow legalized sports wagering". The NCAA boycotted the state in the wake of HB2, the state's much-debated "Bathroom Bill".
