Derrick Rose will miss the rest of the season with a torn meniscus.
He has had multiple knee problems since his 2010-11 MVP season with the Chicago Bulls.
Charles is a freshman at Pennsylvania State University from Long Island, New York, majoring in broadcast journalism.
Rose, who has been out of action since March 27, played well for the Knicks in his first season in NY, averaging 18.0 points and 4.4 assists per game, even if his three-point shooting percentage was down compared to past seasons.
"I thought he's played well", Hornacek said. "Again, the way the season has gone, to have something like that happen towards the end is a bad break for us".
Rose suffered the injury in Monday's game against the Pistons and was limping noticeably throughout much of the game.
This was Roses 8th season in the National Basketball Association.
Rose previously tore his meniscus in 2013.
When he's healthy, Rose is a dynamic scorer. He ends it having played 64 games, having already missed 10 before Sunday's matinee against Boston and now sidelined for New York's final six.
This should also quash any talks of re-signing Rose for the Knicks, at least at the level that Rose has been looking for.
Traded to NY last June with Justin Holiday for Robin Lopez and Jerian Grant when the Bulls made a decision to cut ties with the Chicago native, Rose's current season got off to a shaky start while he successfully defended himself in civil court against sexual assault allegations brought by a former girlfriend.
