Panthers sign Pro Bowl DT Kawann Short to 5-year, $80M deal

Carolina announced Monday it has agreed to a five-year deal with Kawann Short, and multiple reports said the contract is worth up to $80 million.

"KK has been very important to what we've been able to accomplish on defense", Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said, via Carolina's team website. That ranks him third among all defensive tackles in the NFL. "He's a great player, but also a quality young man who has the respect of his teammates in the locker room". I knew I was either going to sign the tender or get an extension.

He had a slow start last season but did manage six sacks and the Panthers placed the franchise tag on him back in February.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported terms of the agreement.

The deal contains $35 million in guaranteed money at signing, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Locking in Short long-term and ensuring he'll be ready to play in 2017 gives the Panthers a pretty stout defense heading into the coming year, which Carolina expects should be a bounceback year after a disappointing 2016. In 2015, he recorded a career-high 11 sacks, the most by a defensive tackle in team history. "He's everything we're looking for in a Panther".

The Panthers lost some key players following their run to Super Bowl 50, but the loss of star cornerback Josh Norman, who had his franchise tag rescinded, significantly impacted their secondary in 2016. He was originally selected by the Panthers in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Purdue.

Short has been with the Panthers for four years, and has put up 22 sacks in that time.
