US special operations soldier was killed today in Afghanistan

The U.S. and Afghanistan have been conducting special operations against ISIS-Khorasan for many months.

The soldier's name and unit were not released, pending notification of next-of-kin.

A U.S. soldier was killed while conducting operations against Islamic State in Afghanistan late on Saturday, a USA military spokesman said in a message posted on Twitter.

In a tweet issued Saturday, a spokesman for USA forces in Afghanistan said the soldier was mortally wounded during an operation in the Nangarhar Province.

The soldier died of wounds sustained during a joint mission with Afghan forces in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The soldier was conducting operations against ISIS in Nangarhar Province when he was fatally wounded, Salvin confirmed.

Ten U.S. servicemembers were killed in hostile situations in Afghanistan in 2016, according to the website icasualties.org, which tracks those numbers.

"On behalf of all of U.S. Forces - Afghanistan, I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our fallen comrade", Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said in the statement.

The mission's spokesman, U.S. Capt. Bill Salvin, said since January 1, U.S. forces have carried out some 460 strikes in support of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), and in March alone, 79 strikes killed more than 200 fighters. Last year, 13 US soldiers died in the country, 10 of them because of enemy fire.

"We didn't see American soldiers in Achin and Shadal Bazaar before, but 15 days ago when the anti-IS operation started Americans also came here and they are helping Afghan forces", said Kamin.
