However, one such instance of an 8-year-old girl living with monkeys in Uttar Pradesh has recently come to light.
She was found with a troop of monkeys by sub-inspector Suresh Yadav during a patrol in the Motipur range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. "He sped away with her in his police vehicle while the monkeys gave chase".
The villager returned and informed the local people but each time the locals went to rescue the girl, who was apparently injured, the monkeys would attack them.
She becomes violent quickly and is frightened at the sight of humans, the Times of Indian reported.
There is no lead about the family or parents of the girl who can neither talk nor can comprehend any language.
"She is still not able to speak, but understands whatever you tell her and even smiles", Singh said. She was surrounded by three monkeys. According to Chief Medical Officer DK Singh the girl has lived with animals for some times and after months of guidance now she is showing signs of improvement.
"Sometimes she walks on feet and suddenly comes down on all four", says the doctor. She would often drop it on the floor and eat it.
The girl has shown improvement following the treatment, but the improvement has been very slow.
Her story has similarities with Rudyard Kipling's tale about a boy called Mowgli who was brought up by wolves.
She'll eventually be sent to the government's child protection office, doctors said.
