The playoffs are about adjustments, but if one team is clearly superior, it's hard to mask the truth in a best-of-seven series.
Harden was superb throughout, recording game highs in points (28) and assists (12) to resuscitate an offensive attack that went silent as the Spurs rolled to victories in Games 2 and 3.
Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal (3) dribbles past Boston Celtics center Kelly Olynyk (41), of Canada, and Avery Bradley (0) during the first half in Game 4 of a second-round NBA basketball playoff series, Sunday, May 7, 2017.
The Washington Wizards haven't had a problem taking it to the Boston Celtics in the opening quarters of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. With Game 5 in Boston on Wednesday, here are some takeaways from the Game 4 win.
Asked to confirm Brooks' assessment of that stretch, the Wizards' backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal agreed. What's more, Game 4 marked the first time in 2016-17 that Thomas didn't attempt a free throw during a Celtics loss.
The point guard matchup in this series is fantastic, with Isaiah Thomas and Kyrie Irving.
"We played inspired basketball for each other", Brooks said. Wall had that good of a two quarter stretch.
"It was all our defense", Beal said of the decisive run. He has averaged 6.3 points and 2.6 rebounds off the bench for Wizards this playoffs while completing 40 percent of his 3-pointers.
This was one of Wall's signature games.. "That's why we're able to get out in transition and get open shots, get open layups".
"I wasn't getting anything here", Thomas continued. "He's a small guy". "If you do, this is what you see: a 3, a 3, a drive, a 3, a 3, a drive". How can you make the shot? It's just basically what we've been doing, and just trying to get the ball out of his hands.
Terry Rozier had 16 points and Kelly Olynyk added 14 points for the Celtics.
Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas (4) dribbles against Washington Wizards center Marcin Gortat (13), of Poland, during the second half in Game 4 of a second-round NBA basketball playoff series, Sunday, May 7, 2017, in Washington. That turned a 53-48 deficit into a 74-53 blowout with five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Porter had 18 points. Markieff Morris was huge on both ends, going for 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Washington shot 65.0%, made all 12 of their free throws, and held the Celtics to 31.3% shooting in the quarter overall. It stripped a nip-and-tuck game, turning into further confirmation that the Wizards' offense is proving diabolical opposition for the Celtics.
Thomas later talked about how unbalanced the calls were.
But the Cavaliers prevailed in what was likely one of the best games league-wide in February when LeBron James hit a bank-shot 3-pointer to force overtime in a 140-135 Cleveland road win.
Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were a combined 7 for 29 from the field and 3 for 15 from 3-point range, leaving Durant to lead the Warriors. Morris then recovered it, threw an outlet pass to Wall, and the All-Star took care of the rest, accelerating to the basket and finishing while drawing a foul.
"They were allowing them to be very physical with me, coming off ball screens, coming off pindowns", Thomas said. Assistant Mike Brown took over as acting coach for Game 3 of the first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Boston flipped the script Sunday. Tonight the Wizards are a serious chance of evening out the series, unless Boston can respond with another win.
Washington did just what they needed to, they won the game. The 0-for-9 start was countered by a 5-for-8 surge to close the half.
