Trump says 'fast decision' possible on new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

In the aftermath of Comey's dismissal, Cornyn said Trump was "within his authority" to fire him and said it would not affect the investigation of possible Russian ties to Trump's presidential campaign.

Mr. Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he may select Comey's successor before leaving for his first foreign trip next week.

President Donald Trump has offered additional insight into his thinking about former FBI Director James Comey.

Townsend is the seventh person to interview for the job with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein. They said his firing has "the appearance - if not the reality - of interfering" with the FBI's ongoing probe into whether Trump's campaign associates colluded with Russians to sway election results.

The broadcaster also reported that former FBI Director James Comey is "not anxious about any tapes" of conversations between him and President Donald Trump, adding that "if there is a tape, there's nothing he is anxious about" that could be on it.

As for the shifting version of events surrounding Comey's ouster, the president argued that he is too busy for his staff to know all that is going on and suggested he could cancel press briefings altogether. Josh Holmes, a former aide to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told Fox that his old boss thinks the Garland idea is "terrific".

The administration also says several current Federal Bureau of Investigation and intelligence officials were being interviewed for the interim position, including Special Agent in Charge Adam Lee, who returned to DOJ for a second interview Saturday.

The committee, which is in the process of an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, had hoped to hear from Comey in closed session. John Cornyn, R-Texas, Judge Michael Garcia of the New York Court of Appeals and Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe are expected to be interviewed Saturday with others to follow in the coming days. He dismissed as less desirable at least two of the 14 candidates under consideration, ex-FBI agent and former Rep. Mike Rogers of MI and Sen.
