China will continue with climate pact even if USA pulls out

Under the deal, Mr Obama committed the U.S. to cutting its emissions by between 26% and 28% from 2005 levels by 2025.

The US Conference of Mayors said in a statement that it strongly opposes leaving the climate deal, and called on the nation's mayors to uphold their pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

China said Thursday that it will work with the European Union to uphold the global agreement on climate change even if the US pulls out. The Paris deal has been ratified by 147 out of 197 countries so far.

"A US withdrawal from Paris will be a disappointment to the climate community, but it may also embolden other countries to fill the void left by the USA and take on a greater leadership role", said Glen Peters, a Norwegian scientist who tracks global carbon emissions. If they don't we have to increase the level of ambition.

"We are concerned but we (have) chose to implement. and we will join forces with other parties, especially with China, to develop further cooperation on climate and energy", Canete said in an interview during a trip to Denmark.

What about the rest of the world?

How large are US CO2 emissions?

In 2015, it released 5.1 million kilotons of carbon dioxide, more than all 28 European Union countries combined, and makes up nearly a sixth of all global emissions.

The UNFCCC has almost universal membership and provides the underlying framework for global cooperation to combat climate change.

In March, he signed an executive order to roll back Obama-era policies regulating carbon emissions.

During Trump's overseas trip last week, European leaders pressed him to keep the U.S.in the landmark agreement.

What is the Paris Agreement, anyway?

World leaders, who had hoped to put out a statement of consensus on the Paris Agreement, expressed their frustration, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel declaring: "We have a situation where six, or if you also include the European Union seven, are against one".

Though it remains the largest global carbon emitter, China also leads the world in total installed solar and wind capacity.

Some executives from coal companies have weighed in, arguing the US should stay in with reduced emissions cuts targets, with an eye toward ensuring that Washington keeps some influence over the future of the global energy mix.

They enabled regulators to rewrite key rules curbing United States carbon emissions, lift a temporary ban on federal coal leasing and scrap a requirement for federal officials to consider the impact of climate change when making decisions.

"We don't expect that this will have any impact on PNM", company spokesman Pahl Shipley told the Journal. Under the accord, participating nations agreed to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change.

According to CNN's John D. Sutter the 2 degrees goal is incredibly consequential.

The vast majority of scientists agree that higher temperatures will cause rising seas, flooded coastal cities, mass extinction, drought, migration crises, deadlier heatwaves, crop failures, and stronger storms.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump was favoring an exit, however, and was working out terms of the planned withdrawal with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, an oil industry ally and climate change doubter.

Many economists have big doubts.

"But of course, we also hope to do this in cooperation with others", added Li.

"Trump really isn't as relevant as he wants to be".

Asked by another Twitter userwhat would happen if Trump withdraws despite Musk's advice, the entrepreneur said he would have "no choice" in the matter.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also warned Trump against exiting the Paris climate change deal - a treaty ratified by the United States previous year - in a speech Wednesday, declaring: "The law is the law, and everyone must adhere to it".
