McGregor has zero professional boxing rounds under his belt and will bring a 0-0 record into the fight.
Mayweather, his manager, Al Haymon, and UFC President Dana White were said to be still negotiating purse splits and pay-per-view percentages when McGregor first posted his news. However, his experience has made the art of boxing second-nature, and his return is a much easier transition than McGregor's, who must prepare by crossing over sports and practicing different skills.
"There's so many small decisions that go into the overall big picture", said Paulie Malignaggi, a former world champion who serves as a boxing analyst for Showtime. The only boxer standing in his way is the legendary Rocky Marciano who retired with a 49-0 record. Tickets for the event are already being sold for exorbitant prices and it is expected that the entire event will be sold out months prior to the fight.
It has also intrigued some in boxing, though most dismiss McGregor's chances under boxing rules against one of the greatest defensive fighters in history.
His boxing licence was granted by the California State Athletic Commission in December, allowing him to box in the U.S. state. McGregor and Mayweather will strap on 10-ounce gloves and give it all they have.
"It's insane I read all of these posts where people go 'Mayweather is gonna have his hands full landing on McGregor because of Conor's skill and footwork'".
However, when asked by TSN whether White believed the upcoming fight in Las Vegas would do over and or under 4.99 million buys, he didn't hesitate.
"It's a very good opportunity to show an MMA fighter is a well-rounded fighter, they can win in MMA fights, and also in boxing", Li said through a translator.
"(Conor) wants to fight Floyd Mayweather on August 26, and he wants to defend his (UFC) title this year too. Neither Mayweather nor McGregor have competed this year.
He has launched something he calls the "Mayweather Challenge" because he is "tired of people on social media bragging they live a certain lifestyle when they don't".
If enough time has passed to make people forget that they shelled out almost $100 for a total dud back then, another spectacularly high number is feasible.
Mayweather's resume includes boxing sessions against world-class pugilists Oscar De La Hoya, Diego Corrales, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez and Pacquiao.
