Gennett homers four times for Reds

As for the name "Scooter", there is a cute story behind that.
Left-handed pitcher Dallas Braden had a short career in the Majors, posting a 26-36 record with a 4.16 ERA over five seasons with the Oakland Athletics. Stephen Piscotty went 2 for 3 with his solo homer accounting for the lone Cardinals run in the loss.
I'd say the No. 4 suits him just fine. Watching all those guys play when I was little.
New York's offense gave starter Jacob deGrom (4-3) plenty of run support early, with Juan Lagares, Asdrubal Cabrera and Neil Walker each hitting home runs as NY scored in each of the first three innings.
The Reds would need just one batter to reach for Gennett to get a chance at history.
It wasn't but a day earlier that four hits, much less four homers, sounded far-fetched.
The beneficiary of the Gennett eruption was right-hander Tim Adleman, who extended his recent surge by allowing three hits and one run with two walks while tying his career high with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
Gennett singled in a run his first time up against Cardinal starter Adam Wainwright before starting his home run adventure.
"He had a career night, a great night", said Adam Wainwright, who gave up Gennett's second career grand slam. The last National League hitter to do it was Shawn Green for the Los Angeles Dodgers against Milwaukee in 2002.
Here are all four home runs, with the fourth coming in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Reds' 13-1 win.
"It's surreal, man, it really is", said Gennett, the first Reds player to achieve the feat and who also tied a club record with 10 runs batted in.
"My dad was pretty pissed I was 0-for-19", Gennett joked (he entered in a 1-for-20 slump).
The 24th round pick allowed no hits, no walks and struck out six as Braden threw a flawless game to down the Tampa Bay Rays 4-0. "It's very emotional. You've seen history".
Cincinnati (27-30) has won nine of its past 14 meetings with St. Louis (26-30).
Phillies 3, Braves 1: Aaron Nola allowed a run over eight innings, Odubel Herrera doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth and the Phillies survived a ninth-inning scare to beat the Braves.
Wainwright's streak of scoreless innings ended at 17 in the first inning. Tonight the Reds will be hosting the Cardinals in Game 3 of their four game series. Analysts are shooting numbers of his new stats, one claiming he hit 9.5% of his career home runs.
