Thad Matta out as men's basketball coach at Ohio State

The college basketball world received a bombshell on Monday when Ohio State announced it would be parting ways with men's basketball head coach Thad Matta, effective immediately. Ohio State isn't anywhere near the top of the Big Ten as Matta exits.

Matta previously underwent back surgery that left him without a fully-functioning right foot and back complications.

His first team at Ohio State followed a disappointing final season under O'Brien by winning 20 games, including a shocking last-second win over previously undefeated and top-ranked IL in the season finale.

With Boals on the staff, the Buckeyes posted 193-62 record with three outright or shared Big Ten championships, six NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the Final Four during the 2011-2012 season. The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith. He was Butler's head coach in 2000. "I don't know. I just felt as if I was to de-commit, actually take my time, figure everything out it would just be a lot better". "We started talking about that on Friday (and) the flow of the conversation took me to the reality". Matta got his first head coaching job was at Butler in 2000 where he stayed one year before going to Xavier from 2001-2004.

OSU basketball coach Thad Matta looks downcourt during the Buckeyes game against Rutgers on February 8.

"Never say never", Matta said when asked if he's done coaching. Xavier has won at least 21 games in seven of those seasons and 23 or more in six campaigns.

Matta recorded the most wins in Ohio State history with 337 wins over 13 seasons.

Who should Ohio State consider? "Thad Matta will no longer be the head men's basketball coach".

"I want to thank the players. We weren't winning the battles in recruiting that I thought we might have change to win as he did".
