The Los Angeles Chargers were said to have a positive work out with National Football League free agent quarterback Robert Griffin III Tuesday, but general manager Tom Telesco chose to go with a sturdier backup in former Ohio State Buckeyes QB Cardale Jones.
And now Jones joins former Bills interim coach Anthony Lynn, who was named the Chargers' new coach this offseason.
The Bills selected Jones in the fourth round of the 2016 draft under a different front office and different coaching staff. Jones was notably underutilized during team activities and minicamp in Buffalo.
Robert Griffin III had worked out for the Chargers recently but wasn't signed.
Peterman threw 47 touchdowns in his final two years with the Pitt Panthers, and with Taylor on the ropes going forward, the kid may get an opportunity this year.
On Wednesday, after one appearance and 11 attempts during his rookie season, Jones was traded to the Chargers for a conditional draft pick. "He's accurate. I think his development has come along fine". Additionally, by being fourth on the depth chart behind Tyrod Taylor, T.J. Yates, and Nathan Peterman, he would have provided little use to the team this season. Jones appeared in only one game for the Bills as a rookie, throwing for 96 yards with an interception in a 30-10 loss to the Jets.
