President Donald Trump has fired Reince Priebus as chief of staff, replacing him with Homeland Security Secretary Gen (rtd) John Kelly, amid growing tensions at the White House due to infighting among top staffers. The White House press secretary would not explicitly say that the White House or the president, for that matter, had confidence in Reince Priebus.
"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff", he said.
Republican Lindsey Graham of SC, a frequent Trump critic, welcomed Kelly as "one of the strongest and most natural leaders I've ever known".
"C***-blocking" generally refers to attempts to prevent someone making sexual advances, but in this case Mr Scaramucci appears to be accusing Mr Priebus of obstructing his success in Mr Trump's White House administration.
Some senior White House aides are encouraging President Trump to move embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions from his post as attorney general to the now-vacant leadership spot at Department of Homeland Security, ABC News has learned.
"We accomplished a lot together", Trump tweeted, "and I am proud of him!"
Donald Trump is a failed president, and Republicans are going to carry that failing president on their backs during the 2018 election.
He added of the retired Marine general: "John Kelly will do a fantastic job".
He was said to be frustrated over an alleged strategy by Mr Trump's lawyers to discredit or curb the investigation. He credited Priebus with revitalizing the RNC and served Trump as chief of staff "capably and passionately". Scaramucci cited the same tidbit as evidence of their existing ties when he gave his first press conference later that day.
Now, after Trump communication director Anthony Scaramucci told a reporter he was prepared to fire everyone in the press shop, White House aides who are more closely associated with the party than with Trump world are anxious about who is next.
He obliquely accused Priebus of being the source of White House leaks that have been a source of constant irritation to the president. "He's a great American". Once he said that it had been one of the great honours of his life to serving Trump and the country.
The President offered Scaramucci the vacant position in the communications shop last Friday.
"I can't have a couple of friends up from "Fox & Friends" and Sean Hannity, who's one of my closest friends, dinner with the president and his first lady without it being leaked in seven minutes", he said.
On Kelly's appointment, Priebus said: "I think General (John) Kelly is a brilliant pick". "I can tell you two fish that don't stink, and that's me and the president". I don't know if this is repairable or not.
John Kelly's new mission is to steady the roiling Trump administration - and quiet the friendly fire - as White House chief of staff.
Priebus "has left it all out on the field, for our party and our country", Ryan said.
