North Korea's threat against Guam spotlights a western Pacific U.S. territory that looms large as a military asset, despite being smaller than Singapore.
Kim Lewis is an employee at Cedarville University. Both are now living in Guam with their son while he serves in the military.
"He says mom we're ready. We know what's going on and they're not anxious", said Lewis.
Residents said they could no longer "shrug off" the idea of being a potential target of Pyongyang, despite US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson playing down the threat.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says he doesn't believe there is "any imminent threat" from North Korea, including to Guam.
I am working with Homeland Security, the Rear Admiral, and the United States to ensure our safety. I spoke to Joint Region Marianas Commander Rear Admiral Shoshana Chatfield who confirmed this with me.
Japan lies only about 620 miles to the east of North Korea, which has conducted numerous missile tests this year.
Additionally, I have reached out to the White House this morning. In 2013, state media cited leader Kim Jong Un as having ordered his military to prepare plans on launching strikes on US military bases in Guam, Hawaii and South Korea as well as the American mainland. They have said that America will be defended.
The exchange of threats has alarmed the tiny island, which is home to about 160,000 people, about 40 percent of whom are Filipinos, according to Norman Analista, president of the Filipino Community of Guam. We are not just a military installation.
My office will continue to provide information to our community.
God Bless the people of Guam and God Bless The United States of America.
