Boy, 8, hammered to death to protect his sister from sexual abuse

An eight-year-old California boy was allegedly beaten to death with a hammer by his mother's ex-boyfriend while trying to protect his seven-year-old sister from molestation, reports said Sunday.

The criminal complaint states that Chaney murdered the 8-year-old boy, whose name was Dante, while he was engaged in the crime of committing a lewd act on his sister.

Six days later, Daniels died.

Investigators say at some point, Chaney Jr. turned a hammer and knife on Danae, as well as the children's mother, 28-year-old Elizabeth Salone. The suspect also reportedly used lighter fluid during the attacks.

She said: 'Trying to save his sister from this child molester, that's why he was beat the worst'.

"Dante gave his heart to a 4-year-old In Southern California, so a 4-year-old lives because of [him]", Brown said, according to NBC News affiliate WSFA.

Police said a 16-year-old was detained in connection with the death of 14-year-old Bedford resident, Kaytlynn Cargill.

After the assault, cops say Chaney stole the family's vehicle and fled the scene. Salone told detectives that she was "struck at least three times" with a hammer from behind as she went to check on her child.

Dante had just started third grade at Oakridge Elementary School in Sacramento. Chaney was captured a day after the attack in Nevada hiding in someone's backyard.

As per a capture warrant, the kids were home alone with Chaney when the assault happened.

Both Salone and her daughter survived, but Salone's left eye was damaged during the attack.

Chaney facing murder and attempted murder charges.

His criminal record also includes charges for robbery and rape in 2007, forced oral copulation in 2008 and lewd acts with a dependent adult as a caretaker in 2009.

There is a campaign on crowdfunding site Gofundme to raise funds for the family.
