Michelle Williams In Talks For Female Lead In 'Venom'

Rogue One's Riz Ahmed has also reportedly joined the film, but his role has not been revealed.

According to Variety sources, Williams would essay the role of a district attorney and possibly Hardys love interest.

Actor Michelle Williams is in early negotiations to star opposite Tom Hardy in "Venom".

It's time to celebrate for the fans of Williams and Tom Hardy! That film was initially expected to spawn a solo Venom movie, but the planned spinoff never materialized. Hardy has been known to revive or add an interesting flair to genre films (Mad Max: Fury Road and The Dark Knight Rises), and Williams consistently picks quality prestige pictures or out-of-the-box projects.

Sony declined to comment on Variety's report, though the studio already has a connection to Williams, who stars in its upcoming release from director Ridley Scott, "All the Money in the World".

In addition, Sony is also now developing an animated Spider-Man movie featuring Miles Morales, again not associated with Marvel Studios.

Venom is the name of an alien "suit" called a symbiote that first attached itself to Peter Parker's Spider-Man in 1984, before splitting off and finding a new host in Eddie Brock, who relished its malicious streak.

That would pit an Oscar-nominated actress against an Oscar-nominated actor in a superhero movie meant to launch a Sony-centric Marvel universe without their mainstay hero, Spider-Man, showing up at all.

The Venom movie is said to be a gritty, horror-inspired take on the Marvel anti-hero.

"Venom" is set to be released in theaters on October 5, 2018.
