The job fell open after the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in late September following disappointing antics so far this season, with an embarrassing 3-0 loss to PSG in the UEFA Champions League proving to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
According to the Bild newspaper, Heynckes, who also led Real Madrid to the Champions League title and coached Benfica, Athletic Bilbao and a string of Bundesliga clubs, will take over until the end of the season. "But FC Bayern Munich are a matter of the heart for me".
"There is a strong relationship of trust between Jupp Heynckes and FC Bayern", said club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
In a statement issued on Friday, Bayern revealed that Heynckes, who has already had three previous spells in the club's dugout, will be unveiled on Monday. The talks, conducted by Uli Hoeness, Hasan Salihamidzic and myself, have shown it once again.
Hermann worked with Heynckes for two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen and then another two at Bayern before both signed off with the treble in 2013.
"We're very thankful to Jupp that he's accepted the offer of head coach".
Bayern will not want to just stand still and write off another season in which the club only wins the Bundesliga. "At this moment in time, he is the ideal coach for Bayern".
"Jupp Heynckes [as an option] speaks for himself", Boateng said.
Heynckes added: "I wouldn't have returned to any other club in the world, but Bayern Munich is a love affair for me". My coaching staff and I will now do everything to bring back successful football for the fans. "I am looking forward to this task".
That lead to Jupp Heynckes being introduced as the interim manager after reported talks with Thomas Tuchel.
