The Diamondbacks will have some decisions to make on free agents in the offseason, most notably slugging outfielder J.D. Martinez, who arrived via trade with Detroit in July and hit.302 with 29 home runs and 65 runs batted in over 62 games with Arizona.
Darvish gave up one run and struck out seven in five-plus innings to send the Dodgers to the NLCS against the victor of the Chicago Cubs-Washington Nationals series.
Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts had already said that his players wouldn't be celebrating in the pool, but the Arizona Diamondbacks made an all-out effort to ensure that it wouldn't become a Dodgers monument once again! Reliever Jimmie Sherfy gave up three more runs in a critical fifth inning.
In came Kenley Jansen, looking to end the series, the Dodgers closer started the inning off by striking out Grégor Blanco. I don't know what my colleagues had in mind, but my slice of boldness was that the Arizona Diamondbacks would upset the Los Angeles Dodgers in their divisional series. Through four innings he allowed just two hits and no runs. He was also was tremendously efficient with his slider (27 pitches, 21 strikes, five swings and misses), and his cutter (21 pitches, 15 strikes, four swings and misses); the latter was a pitch the Dodgers encouraged him to emphasize.
Maeda was superb during the Division Series, capped by a 1-2-3 eighth inning with two strikeouts Monday night, and afterward his teammates raved about Maeda's selfless acceptance of his new role. He needed just 30 pitches to get through three innings, including a seven-pitch third that give his opposite number, who grounded out in that stretch, nearly no time to sit down. Even after four days of rest following his 58-pitch outing, the 33-year-old righty was anything but sharp in Game 3, though he did his best to keep the Diamondbacks in the game. But the four-time all-star went more than a month without a win around the same time the entire team went almost three weeks with just one. Darvish has a 2.44 ERA in 92 1/3 road innings this year.
The club continued to work the count and forced Greinke to throw nine 3-ball counts into the 5th inning.
Ray escaped trouble in the third inning, despite continuing with his control issues. Greinke labored but prevented the Dodgers from making more headway until Cody Bellinger homered in the fifth.
From there Greinke walked a batter in the following three innings.
Scoring started early, with Chris Taylor hitting a leadoff double, moving to second on a walk, moving to third on a sac fly, and scoring on a slow grounder to first. Neither Zack Greinke (3.2 innings), Robbie Ray (4.1) nor Taijuan Walker (1.0) was able to complete five innings and therefore put themselves in position to win.
A scary moment came in the sixth inning when Christian Walker was hit by a wild pitch. "We were relentless every single pitch".
