Dimitrov and Nadal sizzle in Shanghai

RAFAEL Nadal has continued to scythe his way through the Shanghai Masters, reaching the quarter-finals with a 6-3 6-1 thrashing of temperamental Italian Fabio Fognini.

Swiss superstar Roger Federer will play against Frenchman Richard Gasquet at the Qizhong Stadium later on Friday to fight for another spot in the semi-finals.

Sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov, who saved match points on Wednesday against Ryan Harrison, had a more comfortable day as he beat American 10th seed Sam Querrey 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

Timeless rival Federer was even faster, dismissing Ukrainian qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-2 in 61 minutes.

"He always is very unsafe opponent, and I think this surface, this court helps him", Nadal said.

"I played a very good match, I don't know how many mistakes I made, but very few", said the 16-time Grand Slam victor and top seed in Shanghai.

"I'm glad to reach the semi-finals in this tournament, but to be honest now, as I say always, health is the first of all of my life", Del Potro said.

The 870th career win for Nadal ties him at No 6 in the all-time Open era list behind Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors (1,256 each), Roger Federer (1,121), Ivan Lendl (1,068), Guillermo Vilas (929) and John McEnroe (877). "Of course, being able to win the US Open, Beijing and being in the semi-finals here".

Fourth-seeded Cilic stands between Nadal and a second ATP final in two weeks.

"I don't understand how I can lose a match where I get broken one time in three sets and not managed to get any chances on his serve", said Zverev, who is tipped to one day make world number one. "I think it was a great battle between two players who are playing all the time very focused".

The 25th-ranked Ramos-Vinolas ended Cilic's streak of winning 21 service games in the sixth game of the second set.
