Nigel Farage blasts UK Government for downgrading Donald Trump state visit

"Exact dates for President Trump to visit have not yet been arranged", a Downing Street spokesperson said.

It follows threats of mass protests over Mr Trump receiving VIP treatment.

When diplomats are visiting as part of a state visit, they typically stay at Buckingham Palace.

Donald Trump will visit the United Kingdom in early 2018 but not as a state visit and he will not meet the Queen, reports claim.

May repeatedly refused to cancel her invitation to Trump but postponed his state visit indefinitely.

However, Ms May's office said she was not aware of plans for a "working visit" and said the position on the state visit had not changed, Independent reported.

Only three US Presidents have made State Visits to the UK.

The move would avoid the controversy surrounding Mr Trump's state visit, which was offered by Theresa May within days of his inauguration but is yet to take place.

House of Commons speaker John Bercow said he would oppose the president being invited to give an address in Westminster Hall, citing the president's controversial travel ban and saying "opposition to racism and sexism" were important considerations.

London mayor Sadiq Khan - who has clashed with Mr Trump on Twitter - said he "would not object" to a working visit.

It remains uncertain if the tour would include a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, which would have been at the heart of the pomp and show that accompanies a state visit traditionally hosted by the British monarch.

It is thought he could still make a full State visit - an honour usually reserved for a President's second term - at some stage. Mr Trump said that Britain would be at the front of the queue for a trade deal with the U.S. after Brexit as he accepted the invitation in Washington in January.
