AC/DC founder Malcolm Young dead at 64

He was 64 and had been suffering from dementia for the last three years.

Young's death comes only a matter of weeks after the passing of George Young, the older brother of Malcolm and Angus, who was AC/DC's longtime producer and before that a member of 1960s hitmakers the Easybeats.

Rolling Stone said at the time, he was having cognitive problems but made a decision to continue to perform during the tour, which he had to oftentimes relearn guitar parts that he had written.

Australian rocker Jimmy Barnes, guitarist Slash, horror writer Stephen King, Kiss frontman Paul Stanley, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Bryan Adams, songwriter Diane Warren and Joe Elliott from Def Leppard also took to social media to pay tribute. It remains one of the top 10 best-sellers in RIAA history. As The New York Times noted in 2008, "Since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan started tracking music sales, this Australian band has sold 26.4 million albums, second only to The Beatles in catalog sales, and more than The Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin".

Malcolm Young, the co-founder and rhythm guitarist of legendary rock group AC/DC, died on Saturday morning. Thank goodness and the rock gods that that's the only thing he ever did peacefully - and that he played the guitar as though peace were a foreign concept indeed.

"Malcolm Young was my friend and the heart and soul of AC/DC. He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted".

"Malcolm, along with Angus, was the founder and creator of AC/DC".

"Malcolm was always very organised [so] it was kind of unusual". His loyalty to the fans was unsurpassed.

Angus Young added, "As his brother it is hard to express in words what he has meant to me during my life, the bond we had was unique and very special". Angus is in fact the younger sibling.
