The words between Trump and Ball sparked when Trump called the outspoken basketball dad "ungrateful" for not saying thank you over the president's assist in getting LaVar's son, UCLA guard LiAngelo Ball, and his two Bruins teammates back to Los Angeles after their shoplifting arrest in China.
"It is amusing to think "poor LaVar" in this sense, but what Trump is doing here is not a bad thing for him; it doesn't hurt to have Trump against you", said Dr. Daniel Durbin, head of the USC Annenberg Institute of Sports, Media & Society School for Communication and Journalism who specializes in branding, popular culture, rhetoric and sports.
The three players have apologized and thanked Trump for helping secure their release by raising the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit to the country earlier this month.
"A billion dollars, it has to be there", Ball told USA Today in the spring.
Ball's interview went far afield and was the subject on Wednesday's "Late Night with Seth Meyers", where guest Cuomo described his own reaction to his off-the-wall exchange with Ball.
"That's just him, he always talk wild", the rapper added of LaVar Ball's personality. "I think that if somebody help you, you be appreciative for it, that's it".
Trump's Racist Beef Could Make LaVar Ball A Lot of Money
Many people have opinions about the current president, but few of them can say that they actually have any idea how his brain really works.
"Ball also pushed back against Trump's suggestion that shoplifting "is a very big deal in China".
That was the context of Trump's day-before-Thanksgiving tweets. "There's a lot of other things that's going on".
Perhaps predictably, Trump has been criticized for getting into another Twitter war.
Rapaport said the imbroglio was forcing him into the impossible choice of choosing between two people he hated vehemently.
