"The Brunswick County Landfill will be accepting live Christmas trees for recycling at no charge from all county residents and/or property owners between December 26 - January 31, 2018".
Trying to figure out what to do with leftover Christmas Trees?
Joe Hyndman recycles puts one of his family's Christmas trees on a pile at the Hamilton County Recycling Center on Crabtree Road on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, in the Middle Valley community near Chattanooga, Tenn.
But those trees will end up in the landfill along with the approximate 210,000 tons - that's 420 million pounds - of waste we put into the Laubscher Meadows landfill in Vanderburgh County every year.
An estimated 550 square miles of United States real estate is devoted to growing conifers meant to be cut for Christmas trees, according to the National Christmas Tree Association, cited by Reuters. The trees are turned into free mulch.
The county also teams up with the city of Charlottesville, chipping trees collected through the city's curbside pick-up program.
As an added bonus, the tree could be used as an opportunity for the family to get a closer look at the animals that share the area with them.
Every city has a different place where residents can drop off trees.
Both the County and City programs require that all decorations, stands and nails be removed from the Christmas trees. The convenience Centers will accept Christmas trees during this time also, however, there is a $5.00 charge per tree.
