Dhawan was dismissed on a duck in the first ODI in Dharamsala. He added 7 runs off 14 balls while his team was chasing a modest target of 216 runs. Shreyas Iyer also played a handy role scoring a 70-ball 88.
By the time Dinesh Karthik came to the crease, India was nearly on the verge of victory, but he kept rotating the crease with Dhawan during his 26-run knock, which came off 31 balls and was laced with 3 boundaries. Perera, who had observed in the first inning that the track was offering a lot of spin, used 8 bowlers today, for nearly no results. Tharanga and Samarawickrama have put up a partnership of 121 runs for the second wicket. I got two wickets in one over and that really changed the momentum for us. The lack of self-confidence has denied them a Shreyas Iyer or a Yuzvendra Chahal or a Kuldeep Yadav.
Sri Lanka, buoyed by news about the availability of ace all-rounder Angelo Mathews for the crucial game, will be give it their all to snatch a much-needed series win, in what has been a tough year for them.
Tharanga, though missed his century, went for 12 fours and 3 sixes, frustrating the Indian bowlers. He, however, missed a deserving hundred due to some exceptional glove work by MS Dhoni off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav. Unfortunately, it was the first ODI for Rohit Sharma as the captain in the absence of Virat Kohli and he was disappointed with his and team's performance. The two have brought up 100-run partnership as India's search for wickets continues.
Angelo Mathews also failed to perform this time as he was cleaned up by a ripper from Chahal. Gunathilaka scored just 13 runs.
The wrist-spinners scythed through the Sri Lankan batting order to bundle them out for 215 in under 45 overs after the touring side had made a blazing start. Chahal got a flat delivery on leg stump to go through Mathews and clatter middle-and-off, forcing the Sri Lankan veteran to walk back on a 28-ball 17.
Earlier in his innings, he became the second fastest and Sixth overall to score 4000 one day internationals runs in his 94th innings of his ODI career.
The importance of bowling well in the first 10 overs can't be overemphasised and the lead bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah would be well aware of this as would Lanka's spearhead Suranga Lakmal.
