A woman was killed and her husband seriously injured after a vicious mauling by two pit bulls on Christmas Eve in a Kentucky coal town. Officials said the dogs did not belong to the couple.
Two pitbulls are suspected in the death of Lorraine Brock Saylor, 66, on Sunday morning.
As the attack unfolded on Sunday morning, Johnny's brother James Saylor, who lives next door, heard barking and quickly threw an object at the dogs to distract them long enough so he could get into the house.
Once free, Johnny retrieved a gun and shot both, but killed just one. When he came outside, he shot one of the dogs in the chest as it lunged at him. The dog, which was wounded, had returned to the neighborhood and was put down by the Bell County Sheriff's Department and Bell County Animal Shelter.
Around 10.20am, Lorraine's brother-in-law James Saylor called police to tell them that the two dogs had "savagely" attacked the couple.
Man arrested after 2 pit bulls kill Kentucky woman, hurt husband
He already is in the Bell County Detention Center after being arrested Friday on charges of second-degree assault, domestic violence and unlawful imprisonment.
Johnny Dale Lankford, 42, was charged with harboring a vicious animal, according to the Bell County Sheriff's Department. The caller said they were pit bulls.
"Tragically the woman died from her injuries in the attack", the department said. "It's overwhelming the circumstances and what he found", Steele said.
The name of the woman and her husband (who survived) will be released at a later time by Bell County Coroner Jay Steele after family members have been notified.
An autopsy on Saylor is scheduled for this week.
