FA Cup: Van Dijk grabs derby victor in dream Liverpool debut

Virgil van Dijk enjoyed a dream debut for Liverpool by heading the victor in front of the Kop in the 230th Merseyside derby as they knocked Everton out of the FA Cup.

Even in the white heat of a Merseyside derby - and a knockout, winner-takes-all one, at that - the world's most expensive defender managed to attract attention.

"It was a similar situation (to the penalty against Liverpool for Everton last month) - the first one was no penalty in my opinion and this one wasn't also". And Liverpool lead again.

Sigurdsson then brought Everton level in the 67th minute, capping a fine breakaway to stun the home fans as the visitors had offered little in attack up to that point.

After posting a skit Dejan Lovren status after the signing of Virgin van Dijk from Southampton was announced, Paddy Power have jumped over the news about Mo and Phil - comparing them to the EastEnders characters Mo Harris and Phil Mitchell.

Wayne Rooney proved a little too enthusiastic in his early challenge on Joe Gomez as his mistimed attempt to win the ball back following a poor touch earned the former England striker a yellow card. Holgate had his hand on Adam Lallana's shirt as the Liverpool midfielder turned at the edge of the box, but it didn't look enough to send Lallana to the ground.

Van Dijk had the final say, though.

The mayhem kicked in on around the 40th minute, as Mason Holgate pushed Roberto Firmino over the advertising hoardings, prompting a furious reaction from the Brazilian. He missed an earlier opportunity, but that's a brilliant header.

Van Dijk, though, insisted on being the centre of attention and nodded in Oxlade-Chamberlain's late corner to spark jubilant celebrations.
