George RR Martin's 'Nightflyers': Syfy Reveals Series Details for 1st Season

After rumors floating around for the better part of a year and an excited blog update from George R.R. Martin himself, Syfy has officially picked up the Nightflyers series.

Netflix is co-producing alongside Universal Cable Productions and the streaming service will have the rights to run the show outside the US.

The Game of Thrones author will serve as an executive producer.

As well as the series order, Syfy also announced the show's primary cast, the scientist crew of the Nightflyer itself, tasked with exploring the outer edges of the solar system and ultimately surviving the terrifying encounters that await them.

Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire) is set to star, alongside Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), David Ajala (Fast & Furious 6), Sam Strike (EastEnders), Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf), Angus Sampson (Fargo), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship) and Brían F. O'Byrne (Million Dollar Baby). These eight characters will share a shuttle in the upcoming series for Syfy, and they'll be on a search for intelligent life. Daniel Cerone of The Blacklist, The Mentalist, and Dexter will be showrunner. However, when violent and inexplicable events begin befalling the small crew of the spaceship Nightflyer, they realize the journey will be far more risky than the every imagined.

Martin will executive produce Nightflyers along with Gene Klein, David Bartis and Doug Liman of Hypnotic; Buhler; Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films; Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions.

The 1980 novella was a "haunted starship" story set in Martin's Thousand Worlds universe, which he later expanded as a collection of short stories in 1985. Mike Cahill will direct the pilot.

Nightflyers will be shot in Ireland, and has a tentative premiere date of July, 2018.
