2018 marks the third win in a row for Honda.
Lincoln seized its truck honor over General Motors Company (NYSE: GM)'s Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and the Ford Exhibition.
The Lincoln Navigator was completely re-engineered for the first time in the model's history.
The Navigator, itself, closed 2017 with a 30.1-percent year-over-year increase in December sales. The competition in the Utility Vehicle of the Year category included Alfa Romeo's new Stelvio and Honda's Odyssey minivan.
The announcements were made Monday morning at the auto show's traditional location of the Cobo Center in Detroit.
Since 1994, the Detroit auto show has recognized the North American Car/Truck of the Year, with the winners voted upon by a jury of 60 automotive industry journalists from across the US and Canada. Honda beat out the also-redesigned 2018 Toyota Camry and the all-new 2018 Kia Stinger in the awards. The Honda Ridgeline was crowned truck of the year last year, and the Honda Civic won auto of the year in 2016. The Accord won out thanks to sleek new styling and a roomy, well-appointed interior.
"Honda seems to have executed some sort of magic trick", Chris Paukert, a juror from CNET, said. "Even in low-end trims, it drives well and offers a strong amount of standard equipment". "The ride is exemplary, and when smartly equipped, it is a fine value", said Kirk Bell, NACTOY juror and freelance auto writer.
The winners were selected from a group of 29 vehicles, including 11 cars and 15 utilities.
