Murphy Signs Another Executive Order on First Full Day in Office

After the speech, which also served at times as a strong rebuttal to the policies of President Donald Trump, Democratic legislative leaders said they were looking forward to working with a new governor from their own party after years of seeing legislative priorities blocked by former Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

"America strikes back", he said.

Indeed, this was my first State of New Jersey Governor's inauguration.

Murphy's running mate, former Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver, was sworn in as lieutenant governor.

Murphy's wife, Tammy, and their four children joined him on stage as he was sworn in by state Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.

A salute of cannons then went off outside of the ceremony at the War Memorial in Trenton and Murphy went down a line of officials shaking hands.

The governor reiterated his long-held position that the minimum wage in New Jersey, now $8.60 an hour, must be increased to $15 dollars. He also urged fellow Democrats to get to work right away on measures that would follow through on major campaign promises, including increasing the minimum wage and boosting funding for women's healthcare.

"We can once again be the state that leads the nation in progressive policies and puts common sense and our residents first in line", Murphy said.

On Wednesday, January 17th, Democratic Governor Phil Murphy convened a meeting with members of his cabinet, most of whom have not yet been confirmed by the Senate, to sign a second executive order regarding ethics in this administration.

Columbus noted that Christie's predecessor, John Corzine, broke his leg and other bones in a vehicle accident in 2007.

New Jersey's next governor tweeted out morning wishes to the state.

Murphy was also asked by reporters how much he will be making this year. "It was a true privilege".
