Amidst multiple reports of growing friction between O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith, speculation mounted late in the season that O'Brien could be let go in favor of a new coach. This was an extremely hard decision for me to make as I love this organization and every member of this team both on and off the field.
If there is room for only one, the Houston Texans reportedly plan to retain head coach Bill O'Brien over his boss this offseason.
O'Brien has one year remaining on the five-year deal he signed upon leaving Penn State to become a first-time National Football League head coach. Despite finding their franchise quarterback in Deshaun Watson and making the playoffs twice since 2015, the Texans could be in the market for a new general manager or coach after their 4-11 season wraps up on Sunday.
One way to remedy that is an option sources say McNair is considering: Elevating Smith's position out of the football operation and giving O'Brien more say in personnel decisions.
"That's out of my control, but I would love to have Coach O'Brien with me", Watson said earlier this month.
Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle cited many sources about the clash of egos between the two and the tension that has surrounded the squad because the two dislike each other that much.
The Texans closed out their 2017 campaign with a 22-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He also would come with Bill Belichick's approval from his days on the Patriots staff. O'Brien is 31-32 in four seasons.
