Florida School Shooting: Official GoFundMe Set Up For Victims

A teacher who hid 19 students during a school massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School slammed lawmakers on Thursday for offering prayers to the vicitms instead of acting to prevent school shootings.

Nikolas Cruz has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.

Police say Cruz was armed with multiple magazines and at least one AR-15 style rifle.

Seventeen people were killed and another 14 people have been treated at area hospitals.

While the majority of Americans like to pin mass shootings on those with mental health issues - a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted in October 2015 showed that 63 percent of respondents believed "mass shootings [were a] sign of mental health" - statistics show that those individuals are actually far less likely to commit acts of violence than the average person living without mental health issues.

Mr Trump, who did not speak publicly immediately after the shooting, weighed in on Twitter early Thursday, calling the suspect "mentally disturbed" and stressing it was important to "report such instances to authorities, again and again!" On Thursday, he pointed to the shooter's history of mental illness in a tweet.

Nick Dworet, a senior, was killed when a former student opened fire at the school on Wednesday, his coach at TS Aquatics confirmed to IndyStar. Students who knew him described a volatile teenager whose unusual behavior had caused others to end friendships with him.

Cruz bought the semi-automatic rifle about a year ago, and law enforcement agents said it was done legally, Buzzfeed News' Tom Namako reported.

After vowing to wear orange to commemorate National Gun Violence Awareness Day, she continued her empowered message: "We all have a voice and a right to feel safe, to be protected from people who are a threat, particularly when handed a deadly weapon". The family agreed and Cruz moved in around Thanksgiving.

The president plans to visit Parkland and meet with victims' families and local officials "to continue coordinating the federal response". He did have the key, however.

Jim Lewis said the family is devastated and didn't see this coming. They are cooperating with authorities, he said.

Noah Parness, a 17-year-old junior, said the fire alarm went off for the second time of the day about 2.30pm (2.30am Thursday, Thailand time). She said Cruz had been abusive to his girlfriend.

"That for me changed it to an active shooter scenario", he said.

Of the 17 victims, 12 died in the school, and two just outside the building, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said.

Meanwhile, first responders appeared to be treating wounded people on the sidewalks.

A police officer waved the students on, urging them to quickly evacuate. Another hid behind her teacher's desk. "We will respond in full and investigate it", Israel said. I never had a doubt that we (weren't) going to die.

One student used a book to shield herself from the gunfire. He said he was relieved when he finally found his mother. If she wasn't it there, I don't know what I would have done.

Friend said she thought the whole thing could have been a drill until she saw her teacher "dead on the floor". "I hopped a fence".

A representative from Broward Health North, where numerous injured were taken was pleased to announce that three have been discharged and they hope to sent two more home on Friday.
