A select few people, starting today, have access to the beta program and all of its awesome new features that Sony has made a decision to share with us today via a sneak peek. Like all the updates that came before it, this will add a bevy of new features and quality of life improvements to the PS4.
The update introduces a new family Play Time Management feature, the ability to upload custom wallpapers via USB, enhancements to notifications and the Quick Menu, and more. We certainly hope it's soon, though, as a lot of the changes coming with the PS4 5.50 update seem as if they will change the system for the better. This allows accounts listed as family managers to manage playtime for child accounts.
'Notifications on PS4 will be sent to the child during gameplay so that he or she knows when they should save and quit. Images can be zoomed and cropped to get them looking just right. This is accomplished via a new USB storage device option on the Themes area of the Settings menu. Now it is. Users can put their own images on a USB stick and set it as a wallpaper. Last but not least, there's a new option for tournament team pages that lets you customize logo and backgrounds as well as edit the profile of your team.
Sony is also updating the Library UI to include a "This PS4" tab, which shows all of the applications installed on the console. Games will soon be broken down via what is now installed on the system - labeled as "This PS4" in the library - and all of the items associated with your account via an option labeled with your name and avatar.
The other features are mostly there to help with clutter and to make finding games in your library easier. Finally, the PS Plus tab will show you games that have been downloaded using a PS Plus membership, and with this new update, you'll even be able to hide apps you don't use. This means that the console will track how long a child is playing over the course of the day and cut them off when they reach the two hour maximum or if the clock strikes 10. You can hide content like betas, trials, and demos.
Users will be able to access friends from their custom list via a pulldown menu under the Friends tab and see their online status.
Whenever you're listening to music on PS4, you'll be able to access certain shortcuts from the Quick Menu. As an added benefit, gamers can hit the "triangle" button to play and pause music entirely for the Media Player. You can also now manually delete notifications. The "This PS4" tab will list all the applications that are installed on the PS4 system.
PS4 Pro owners will receive a "supersampling mode" which will enable those with HDTVs (1080p or less) to experience enhanced visuals in PS4 games. This process involves a game being rendered at a higher resolution (up to 4K, in the case of certain PS4 games) and then downscaled to your display's resolution, thereby providing greater clarity. "Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of PS4 Pro".
