Real Madrid Eye Summer Swoop for Tottenham Defender

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Toby Alderweireld's situation at Tottenham Hotspur as the Red Devils ponder a summer transfer bid for the defender, according to reports in the British media.

Alderweireld has formed a rock solid partnership with fellow Belgian centre-back Jan Vertonghen since he made the switch to Tottenham in the summer of 2015.

The Madrid back line could do with revitalising, and Alderweireld may be the ideal candidate to add solidity given he has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League over the past three seasons.

Mauricio Pochettino is looking to ease Alderweireld back and said: 'He is 28 and it was a massive injury that we need to care about.

There has been growing speculation suggesting that Alderweireld was unhappy at being left out of the recent wins over Arsenal and Juventus despite returning to action earlier this month.

The article says that Manchester United are very much interested in a move to sign Alderweireld because of the ongoing contract situation at White Hart Lane.

No talks over a new deal have been talked about despite the 28-year-old having the option to extend his current contract at the North London side for a further year, The Mirror reports.

Alderweireld is now contracted at Spurs until the summer of 2019, which could be extend to 2020 due to a one-year extension option.

Due to the complexity of his current deal, Spurs may be forced to sell him this summer given the fact a £25 million release clause comes into force at the end of next season, as long as it is activated at least 14 days before the transfer window closes.
