J.D. Martinez is now signed with the Boston Red Sox, so the Arizona Diamondbacks are looking elsewhere to strengthen the outfield.
On the Yankees' side of things, Drury, 25, fills a need for infield depth at second and third. Souza enjoyed a breakout season in 2017, hitting.239 with 30 home runs.
So we could see Drury at third and, say, Wade at second for the first month of the season before the Yankees decide to change things up. For his career, Souza owns an OPS+ of 106 across parts of four big-league seasons. He hit.286 with 16 home runs and 130 hits in 134 games played. The 23-year-old right-hander finished the 2017 season in High-A ball.
Drury's offensive numbers have been very home-heavy. "I think all those things will serve him well".
"He became a lot more consistent of a player past year", he said on 98.7 FM Arizona's Sports Station's Burns & Gambo Tuesday. He's also logged time in the outfield, playing both left and right field.
Drury and the Yankees have the same aspirations for 2018.
Ultimately, the Diamondbacks got the best out of this trade.
"To be intellectually honest about it, Drury's going to have a leg up given the fact he's had two years of major-league experience that he can fall back on, plus postseason experience and all those things will serve him well", Cashman said on the third base position.
The trade addresses one of the last few holes within New York's roster as Drury will likely become the team's starting third baseman after they dealt Chase Headley and missed out on retaining Todd Frazier, who signed with the crosstown-rival Mets. In 100 games at the Class-A level, he led the Florida State League with a.397 on-base percentage and ranked second in batting avg. Dyson said he'll play wherever he is needed. Drury will not be arbitration eligible until 2019 and can not become a free-agent until 2022.
