Virginia, North Carolina clash for ACC tourney title

Duke will be 4-point favorites in the third matchup of the teams on the season, as the teams have split the first two matchups.

Despite the duo's poor shooting, Pinson was able to help UNC overcome an early 14-0 deficit and turn what was a one-score game for the majority of the night into a late blowout.

Syracuse: The Orange entered the day with an RPI of 36, and Boeheim has been touting good road victories against Louisville and Miami. The game was a lot closer than what the final scores will show. Notre Dame captured it back in 2015. It seemed as though the Fighting Irish gained a huge following. UVA last won the ACC Tournament in 2014 while Clemson has never won it. All that set up an encore for the greatest rivalry in college basketball.

UNC senior Theo Pinson has been coming on strong as of late. It's been noted before that Berry and Allen are actually friends. "They're going to have long possessions". They may be okay with each other off the court, but during these games, it's all business.

- The night started off slow for both teams, with neither squad scoring within the game's first three minutes. I think that the Tar Heels will win the rebounding battle and will win this game as a result.

Woods' three-point play was followed by a Manley dunk, and the momentum carried over to the starters once they returned. UNC had a 15-3 lead real quick. Marvin Bagley III was the game's high scorer with 33 points on 15-for-23 shooting.

"We were a little bit just too fast at the start", senior captain Grayson Allen said. The Freshman was altering shots, grabbing rebounds on both ends and scoring easily. Although Duke eventually dug out of that double-digit hole to go in front 27-26 later in the half, its lead only lasted 18 seconds. The man who has really stepped up in the ACC Tournament responded with a dunk to end the Duke run.

Freshman Garrison Brooks said there wasn't any significant conversation about poise down the stretch, which had a calming effect of its own.

All boast double-figure scoring averages, and Duke averages 85 points per game on the season.

Salt scored all eight of his points and snatched six of his eight rebounds after halftime. Afterward he said the reason he went for the coat was because he couldn't lay his hands on Pinson. "If you make a turnover, you know that you're going down and you're about to play defense for 30 seconds because they keep moving the ball until they get what they want to get". Everybody and their mama is going to be watching the game tomorrow. He got a flagrant foul - and got roasted on social media. "And when we're playing defense and we're out there just running around and being active and competing-you know, it's hard to stop us".

Allen finished with 16 points and Gary Trent Jr. scored 20.

Pinson scored a career-high 25 points and had 11 rebounds, helping the Tar Heels recover from a horrific start and bad shooting by their leading scorers to beat No. 24 Miami 82-65 on Thursday night. Allen was hot and attempted a three-pointer, but missed.

Brooks was not hurt and made two free throws with 52.7 seconds left.

How the committee will view North Carolina compared to the other two candidates probably depends on what its priorities are. The guys in the pain are protecting the basket.

Five Tar Heels scored in double figures against Duke, led by Luke Maye, who put up a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

So as he is wont to do, he sent five new players onto the floor to see if they could do any better.

"They are the No. 1 team unanimously, and they beat us by 77 points or whatever it was", Roy Williams said.

While Duke beat UNC in last year's ACC semifinal, and ultimately went on to win the ACC title, Carolina had the last laugh when they went on to win the 2017 NCAA Tournament. But everyone knows that by now. What's more, the Tar Heels would have amassed an incredible seven wins over teams projected to be seeded fifth or better in the NCAA tournament.
