Australia's clean sweep in team pursuit

As the tension built with every stroke Cate Campbell made while anchoring Australia to a world record in the women's 4x100 metres freestyle, her teammate Shayna Jack realised this was not the most nerve-racking she had found herself during the opening day of the Commonwealth Games.

Cate said she said the home-crowd support lifted the hot favourites.

The Australians, who had won the title at the last six Games, were facing arguably their biggest threat in a Commonwealth final since they were beaten by England at the Victoria Games in 1994.

There was no sleep-in for the world record-holders in the Commonwealth Games pool on Friday.

"But I think it was time for a change at Cycling Australia".

"I knew I had to swim a certain time to get that spot and that's all I've ever wanted in my sport", said Jack, who trains with the Campbell sisters under coach Simon Cusack.

"It's always tough in a team pursuit getting silver because you just lost the race but after the legs stop hurting we'll let the moment sink in, and realise that what we've accomplished as a team is something to be proud of".

Canada's Taylor Ruck, however, ended a potential Australian gold rush and temporarily sucked all of the frenzied expectation out of the venue when she held off a fast-finishing Ariarne Titmuss in the women's 200m freestyle.

Glaetzer, Australia's sprint king, paid tribute to his late coach Gary West, who lost his battle with motor neurone disease previous year, aged 57.

Chalmers continues to grow in stature after becoming the first Australian man in 48 years to win the Olympic 100m freestyle title in Rio two years ago. "I was like, "omigosh", and then I looked up at the board and I saw that I'd won".

"When we set the world record (at Rio) it was a really quick time and we weren't expecting to get near it tonight".

Looking ahead to the possibility of a clean sweep of her events at the meet - the 50m/100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay - she added: "I haven't even thought that far". "I knew she had gone out hard, the crowd was going mental", said Archibald, who set a Commonwealth-record 3:24.119 earlier in the day.
